Woodland Indian artists Greg Johnson, Wyona Jack, Jerry LaBarge, and others practice some of the rarest and most beautiful art forms in Wisconsin’s cultural garden and ones that appeal to people everywhere.  Dillman’s is offering this new series of workshops for 2010 in partnership with the Woodland Indian Art Center in Lac du Flambeau.  All workshops are lead by master Native artists and will highlight both traditional art making techniques and provide an informative conversation on the cultural context of the Woodland style arts and crafts.

Workshop fee for 5 teaching days:  $475 plus tax

Accommodation & meal fee:  $366 plus tax (includes 6 nights’ accommodations, Sunday dinner and 2 receptions)

Greg Johnson: Beading Techniques. Greg is a master Native artist working in beadwork, birch bark canoes, wigwams, moccasins, and regalia.  Greg is the Artistic Director of the Woodland Indian Art Center and was awarded the 2009 Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant through the Wisconsin Arts Board.  Greg speaks Ojibwemowin, partakes in old-time Ojibwe medicine societies, and was the editor of the Lac du Flambeau newspaper.

Jerry LaBarge:  Decoy Carving.  Jerry is a Tribal Elder and one of the leading decoy makers from Lac du Flambeau.  Jerry has been carving fish decoys for several decades and learned his craft from his father and other community elders.   Jerry is frequently commissioned to carve 'fish' for fellow tribal members to use and for decoy collectors from around the country. He works at the LdF Youth Center where he mentors kids in the traditional art of decoy carving.

Wyona Jack:  Birch Bark Baskets.  Wyona is a birch bark basket maker and a skilled teacher in the community. She is one of the few remaining basket makers available that uses traditional methods. Wyona does her own harvesting of the bark and weaves her baskets together with lashings.
